I have walked every block on the island of Manhattan.
438 miles
144 hours & 38 minutes.
33 walks
In four centuries of recorded history— from the Lenape people to Dutch colonists, from British monarchy to American democracy, from farmland to the industrial revolution, from a desperate trading post to the financial and cultural capital of the world—Indigenous peoples and immigrants, slaves and monarchs, revolutionaries and rock stars, social reformers and exploitive grifters—New York City has seen it all, and so have I (ish).
My goal was simple: to connect with the island on a human scale, to feel the character of each block and neighborhood.
Inevitably, I missed a few streets—ones I had walked before, others I missed, and some abandoned when I was too tired.
This project was never just about walking. It was about getting a deeper sense of this great city during the time I lived in it.
I love you, New York City. I am grateful for everything you have given me.
The effort was inspired by THESE GUYS.
