My Manahatta Walkabout - About

August 20, 2025

Over the last 6 years I have walked every block on the island of Manhattan.

Total Miles:

Total Time:

The effort was inspired by THESE GUYS.

Next to my marriage and children, this has been the most meaningful project of my life. Over the course of several years, I set out to walk every street on the island of Manhattan—an undertaking as vast and layered as the city itself.

Manhattan has seen everything in its four centuries of recorded history: the Lenape people, Dutch colonists, waves of immigrants, the rise of industry and finance, and the flowering of arts and culture that helped shape the modern world. By walking its streets, I traced the footsteps of presidents and queens, rock stars and opera stars, filmmakers and photographers, dreamers and strivers of every kind.

The goal was simple but ambitious: to connect with the island on a human scale, to feel the distinct character of each block and neighborhood. While I inevitably missed a few streets—ones I had walked before, others overlooked, and some I was too tired to finish—the journey captured the essence of Manhattan: a living mosaic of history, creativity, and resilience.

This project was not just about walking; it was about bearing witness to the story of New York, told one street at a time.

For those who care about such things, my goal was to connect with Manhattan block by block, to feel the pulse of every neighborhood. I did my best to cover every street, though I missed some—those I had walked before, those I overlooked, and some I was simply too tired to take on. But the essence remained: in walking the island, I walked through time, place, and the endlessly layered story of the city.
